WSEU Grassroots (U8 to U10)

WSEU Grassroots is our U8 to U10 development program designed to build confident, capable young players through high ball contact, age appropriate training, and a positive learning environment. The program is structured, coach led, and focused on long term player development while keeping the experience fun, positive, and engaging for every player.

Key Program Focus: Fun, confidence, repetition, creativity, and strong foundational skills with the ball.

Standards Alignment

WSEU Grassroots aligns with Canada Soccer Grassroots principles and the direction of the Manitoba Soccer Association and Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association. This model supports long term player development by emphasizing learning, participation, and an enjoyable experience at early ages.

Registration Structure and Season Blocks

Registration is open and non selective. There are no tryouts, evaluations. Grassroots programming is offered in seasonal blocks to support family flexibility and strong program delivery.

  • Open registration for U8 to U10 players within the WSEU catchment
  • Seasonal blocks commonly include Spring, Summer, and Fall/Winter
  • Block based registration supports staffing, field planning, and appropriate group sizes

Program Structure

Grassroots is delivered through structured training sessions and festival style game play. Weekly game sessions are delivered in a festival style format, meaning players take part in multiple short games designed to maximize touches, participation, and learning. Players are not assigned to permanent teams and rotate regularly to support social development and reduce perceived hierarchy.

  • Weekly coach led training sessions
  • Weekly festival style game sessions with multiple short games
  • Players rotate within training groups and are not placed on fixed teams for the season
  • One scheduled WYSA Jamboree per registration block (each two month block)
  • Festival style game play means multiple short games focused on participation, learning, and enjoyment rather than standings or results.

Training Environment

Training sessions use a station based format to maximize touches, learning repetitions, and engagement. Each session includes four activity stations with the field divided into four quadrants. Players rotate every 10 to 15 minutes to keep sessions active, fun, and development focused.

  • Four activity stations per session (field divided into four quadrants)
  • Rotations every 10 to 15 minutes to maintain intensity and focus
  • High ball contact volume and minimal waiting
  • Core themes include ball mastery, dribbling, passing, finishing, and small sided play

WYSA Jamboree and Festival Days

Traditional league play is replaced with festival style programming. Weekly game sessions are delivered in a festival style format with multiple short games and no standings. In addition, the program includes one scheduled WYSA Jamboree per registration block (each two month block).

  • Multiple short games designed for participation, touches, and learning
  • No standings, rankings, or score tracking
  • Game Leaders guide play and support a development focused environment
